Will Gas Prices Change Our Cities?

Many experts claim rising gas prices are good for us, as they are forcing us to change our habits and develop new technologies. One such expert suggests the days of hour long commutes are over as people move back to city centers.
Would this be bad, can you imagine this happening in a country where a brand new home is the dream of many young men and women? I'm curious to hear what you think, is there a positive side to this fiasco?
